Hasta el día que se presentó en los premios Óscar, algunos familiares de Lady Gaga no sabían que la cantante fue abusada sexualmente. En la entrega de premios de la Academia, Gaga interpretó “Til It Happens To You”, tema de la película The Hunting Ground. En el escenario estuvo acompañada de otras personas que han sido víctimas de violencia sexual y dedicó su show a Kesha.
Más tarde, Gaga publicó en su cuenta de Instagram que ni su abuela ni su tía Sheri sabían que era una sobreviviente de abuso sexual. “Estaba muy avergonzada. Muy asustada. Me tomó mucho tiempo admitirlo (…) Creí que era mi culpa durante diez años”, publicó en su cuenta de Instagram. Al día siguiente del show la cantante habló con su abuela, quien le dijo que estaba más orgullosa de ella que nunca.
