Hoy es un día melancólico para el Reino Unido, ya que no sólo se conmemoran 55 años del nacimiento de la fallecida Lady Di, sino que se cumple el primer centenario de la Batalla del Somme. Esta lucha inició el 1 de julio de 1916 a lo largo del río Somme, en Francia, y consistió en la búsqueda de las fuerzas británicas y francesas por romper las líneas alemanas durante la Primera Guerra Mundial.
Hasta ahora es la batalla más sangrienta en la historia del ejército británico, por lo que la familia real británica estuvo Francia para conmemorar la triste fecha visitando el Memorial de Thiepval. Aparte, la reina Isabel acudió a misa en Westminster Abbey, en donde también visitó la tumba del soldado desconocido.
