Residents lived in the caves up until the 1950’s when Matera experienced something of a renaissance. Behind what you see here is the more modern city, which shows the progress Matera has made over the last half century. In 2019 Matera will be the European Capital of Culture. It is expected that the attention will bring a new rush of tourism to the city. If you’d like to see this ancient place in a more pristine state, try to make it before then. Part of the reason Matera is so untouched is because it is not easy to get to.
